How To Integrate Flawless DeepEditor into Avid Media Composer

This article covers downloading DeepEditor's Avid Media Composer plugin, so you can create vubs directly from within your editing timeline.

Requirements

MacOS X (Windows version coming soon)
Avid Media Composer® 2024.10 or newer

Download and Install the DeepEditor Plugin

Mac users:

To install the plugin, download the .pkg file you received via email.

Open up the .pkg file to begin the installation process. Follow the steps in the installer to complete the process.

We recommend you restart your machine after completing the installation process.

Accessing Flawless DeepEditor in Avid

Once the plugin is installed you will be able to access DeepEditor in Avid.

  1. Enter your Avid project

  2. Go to Tools (in the top list of menus)

  3. Select Flawless DeepEditor (towards the bottom)

Project Creation

When you log in for the first time you will need to create a project in DeepEditor. Feel free to name it whatever you want, we recommend giving your DeepEditor project the same name as your Avid project.

Source and Driving Data

Before continuing with this tutorial and creating your first shot in the plugin, it is important to understand the visual dubbing process and the two assets that need to be created.

  • Source Media - your original shot containing the original performance from the actor
  • Driving Data - the new performance you want to apply to your source

More details on how to prepare and export your source and driving data can be found in our article How To Prepare Your Media for a Vub.

In short, your exports for both the source and driving data need to follow your project settings. Frame rate, resolution and color space should all be considered.

The frame count / duration and frame rate of your source and driving data must be the same.

OP1a-MXF Mixdown Support

You can create your source and driving data files using OP1a-MXF mixdowns. This is a reliable and streamlined way to prepare your media in Avid for upload to DeepEditor.

When using OP1a-MXF Mixdowns the core principles of source and driving data remain, the two files need to have the same Frame Count Duration and the timing of the driving data in relation to the source needs to be decided by the editor.

Using in/out points along with track selection is a fast and precise way to isolate just the section of media you want to upload.

When creating video mixdowns we recommend selecting the Video Resolution that follows your projects settings. For audio only driving data, ensure only the audio track(s) are selected, despite being able to select Video Resolution provided only audio tracks are enabled, an audio mixdown will be created.

We recommend renaming mixdowns in the bin to give them a more recognizable name.

Shot Creation

Once your project has been created and you have created your source and driving data you can create your first shot.

Step One:

  • If you have exported your source and driving data to a local directory, open a bin and link the files into your Avid project.
  • If you have created OP1a-MXF mixdowns, open up the bin that contains the mixdowns.

Step Two: Within your DeepEditor project, create a new shot.

Step Three: Drag/drop your source and driving data from your bin to the relevant section of the shot page.

Step Four: Name your shot and click ‘Create Vub’.

Draft Quality

The plugin currently supports only the Draft quality setting, so source and driving data are the two files you will be uploading.

Your exports for both the source and driving data should follow your Avid project settings. Frame rate, resolution and color space should all be considered. See Supported Media Formats for more details.

A Draft Quality Vub is used for creative decision-making and allows filmmakers to experiment with different storytelling options. Because of this, training data is not a part of the draft workflow.

Future iterations of the plugin will support training data and quality settings above draft. For now the function of the plugin is to prove out the idea of your vub. Line up the source and driving data, upload them via the plugin and once the vub is ready, import it back in to your project using ‘Add to bin’.

Importing Your Vub via 'Add to bin'

You will be notified by email when your vub is ready to be viewed. Once you have been notified, head back to your shot in the plugin.

Double click on your completed vub. This will take you to the Exports page. From the Exports page, right click on the export you want to import into Avid and then select the bin.

Please note, the vub will be imported following your Avid project's Import settings. Preferences > User > Import

Now you can view your vub in Avid and place it on your timeline. If you then want to refine your vub, run a vub with training data or run a vub in higher quality, you can do this in the DeepEditor web app.
