Refresh the Chrome browser
If you are having an issue with the Refinement tool, the first thing you should do is refresh your Chrome browser: CMD-SHIFT-R (Mac) or CTRL-SHIFT-R (Windows).
As a web-based tool, there’s a small risk of issues based on internet speed/connection, and so refreshing often can clean up a user-interface based issue.
Don’t see the grey face on certain frames in the main window?
If you have some frames in the vub where the grey face does not appear, face detection has not detected a face properly. There are a few possible causes:
- The face may be too blocked (‘occluded’)
- The face may be turned too far away from the camera
- The face may be too dark

Can’t hear audio when playing back the source media?
If you can’t hear the audio when playing back the original source media, it is because the source was uploaded without original audio.
If you would like to hear the new audio against the plate, it is recommended to watch it via the Original Shot window (on the left):
How can I reduce render times in the Refinement tool?
To minimize render times in the Refinement tool, ensure interpolation ramps are set correctly so that only the required frames get rendered. This means bringing interpolation down to 0 on frames that do not need to be rendered (e.g. where the source footage can be used) and using a transition of around 4 frames when increasing or decreasing interpolation values.
How do I mute a character and stop them from saying a line?
The results of your vub will directly correspond to what audio is present in the driving data you use.
Upload driving data that is silent during the moments you wish to mute a character, and the vub result will be a neutral expression while retaining the average emotional expression for that moment.
If there are still mouth movements when there is no spoken driving data dialogue, further mute the performance by setting the driving data scale to zero. Read more about using the driving data scale feature in the refinement tool: here.
If at any point during a render, an internet connection failure happens, what would happen to my work?
If there is an internet connection failure durin gyour render, the render will continue, so you should just log back in when the connection is restored. Note that if you log back in and the render is still running, you should refresh your refinement tool browser on render completion to see the overrides that are saved.
