Refinement Process
Learn four simple steps to ensure your lip sync looks natural and precise.
Refinement Process
Step One: Make interpolation adjustments
- Watch the source media (i.e., original video), then watch the Slapcomp (i.e., vub result) and see how much of the original performance you can use.
- Set interpolation to 0 for any sections where there is no dialogue or we are not changing anything from the original performance.
Step Two: Make jaw adjustments
Make sure the sync is correct and jaw opens and closes in sync with the sound (focus on Ms, Bs, Ps, Fs)
Jaw Movement Tip
Place your hand under your jaw while saying the line; you’ll feel when the jaw should move.
The jaw is the slowest-moving part of the mouth. There should be no sudden jerky movements in the jaw action.
Step Three: Render your work and assess lip sync
- Are any mouth movements absent?
- Are any mouth movements extraneous?
- Do the lips close and open appropriately with the sounds?
- Check for things that can’t be happening—remove any physical impossibilities. Like jerky, ‘snapping’ movements where a mouth moves too quickly to be real.
Step Four: Watch the updated vub and fix specific shapes
(e.g., missing Os, Ps, Vs) (you must adjust the jaw before working on specific shapes)
Mirror Tip
Consider grabbing a handheld mirror or opening your phone camera. Use your own lips and jaw to see how they move for the specific word you're working on.
Work Backwards Tip:
If something doesn't feel right and you are having trouble understanding why, work from the end of the shot. Examine the last word; if it feels OK, play the last two words, and so on. Keep playing a bit more each time until something doesn't feel right - then you've found what it is that's causing the issue.
